Trauma and abuse are never your fault. You can get help to heal the physical, mental, and emotional scars of trauma and abuse.

Trauma refers to an experience that is emotionally distressing or disturbing and that may result in significant psychological or physical harm. Trauma can occur in many different contexts, such as natural disasters, accidents, physical or sexual assault, or abuse. Traumatic events can have a profound impact on an individual's mental and physical health, as well as on their ability to function in everyday life.

Trauma can affect how you feel about yourself and how you relate to others. Those who have gone through abuse or other trauma have a higher risk of developing a mental health condition, such as depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Trauma and abuse are never your fault. You can get help to heal the physical, mental, and emotional scars of trauma and abuse.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop in some individuals who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. Symptoms of PTSD may include intrusive thoughts or memories of the traumatic event, avoidance of reminders of the trauma, hypervigilance, negative changes in mood or cognition, and changes in arousal and reactivity. These symptoms can be severe and long-lasting and can interfere with an individual's ability to function in daily life.

It's worth noting that not everyone who experiences trauma will develop PTSD, and the severity and duration of symptoms can vary widely between individuals. Additionally, treatment for PTSD typically involves a combination of counselling, medication, and self-care strategies, and can be effective in reducing symptoms and improving the overall quality of life.

It can be difficult to tell whether or how much your mental health is affected by past abuse or trauma. Sometimes the symptoms of trauma or abuse don’t start to affect your life for many months or years after the event took place.

How can Creatrix Counselling can help

If you can, reach out to get support from friends or trusted family members who aren’t the cause of the trauma. You can also work on this process on your own by reading and connecting with others. Another option is to begin a therapy journey or join a therapy group where you would find a connection with others who have experienced similar trauma.

You may be thinking, “I’m really tired of letting the trauma affect me. I think it’s behind some of the issues I have, like anxiety and insomnia. I also feel unsafe. I worry all the time. I am scared to try new things or start relationships. I don’t know if I can trust anyone anymore.”

If  beginning therapy is the route you feel will support you but you simply don’t know where to start, then maybe just starting with where you are right now is a good place.  During our therapy journey together, we will spend time talking, feeling and exploring creatively and imaginatively, slowly, sensitively and at your own pace. To support you with coming to terms with your unique issues, help you to get to know who you are and how you can move forwards with more health and vitality.

Sessions can be open-ended, or a fixed number of sessions, you can of course, decide as we go. All sessions are tailor-made to support your individual needs. Ideally face to face but we can offer online if that works better for you. You will also have the option of joining one of our monthly groups online, places are booked directly through Creatrix as these groups run according to numbers and availability. Group sessions can be a deeply healing and beneficial experience for many to share and connect.

If you are struggling with symptoms of Trauma or PTSD and need any further support in this area, other than talking therapies, always seek the guidance and support of your healthcare practitioner/GP.
