those experiencing domestic abuse are at significantly higher risk of developing a range of mental health conditions... its never too late

Domestic abuse, also known as domestic violence, is a pattern of behaviour in which one person uses physical, emotional, psychological, or sexual abuse to control and intimidate their partner or family member. It can occur in any type of relationship, including romantic relationships, marriages, and family relationships.

Physical abuse can include hitting, punching, slapping, choking, or any other form of physical harm. Emotional abuse can include verbal attacks, humiliation, isolation, or controlling behaviour. Psychological abuse can include manipulation, gaslighting, or any other form of behaviour that causes mental harm. Sexual abuse can consist of any non-consensual sexual behaviour or any form of sexual coercion.

Domestic abuse can have severe consequences for the victim, including physical injury, emotional trauma, and long-term psychological effects. It can also result in social isolation, financial dependency, and loss of self-esteem. In extreme cases, domestic abuse can lead to homicide.

It is important to seek help if you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse. Many resources are available, including hotlines, shelters, and counselling services.

How can Creatrix Counselling help?

Whether you are struggling right now and need support or if you have left the relationship. Creatrix can help.

If you decide you would like some counselling, the following information may help you:

  • Counselling is a two-way relationship in which the counsellor listens to whatever you want to say confidently and without making judgements.

  • Counsellors are not supposed to give advice, but they may ask questions or challenge you in ways that may help you look more carefully at some of the assumptions you may have taken for granted.

  • Usually, you will have regular sessions, for 50 minutes, each week. Either face-to-face or online. These sessions may continue for a more extended period of time, as issues are explored in more depth.

  • The aim of counselling is to help you understand yourself better and come to terms with what has happened to you.

  • Good counselling will help you break away from past abusive relationships and work towards living in a more satisfactory and fulfilling way for you. It can also help you to build up your self-esteem.

You will also have the option of joining one of our online groups. Group sessions can be a profoundly healing and beneficial experience for many to share and connect.

However, counselling is not for everyone – and you have to decide whether it is right for you and whether this is the right time for it.

If you are struggling and need any further support in this area, other than talking therapies, always seek the guidance and support of your healthcare practitioner/GP.
